Day nine of fearing for my life
22:30 Sunday, Jul. 30, 2006

NIHAO! I'd like to start off this entry with commentary on HOW SCARY THE DRIVING IS. People say that Asian drivers are bad drivers, but I think it's only because we have so many laws in America. Over here they don't run into traffic often, but in LA we have traffic twice a day or more if there's an accident. The drivers here are truly skilled because they can fit in tiny spaces that I didn't think were possible to fit in, especially since the automobile I'm usually in is a freight truck. The difference is that over here, people pretty much do what they want. There's no law against switching lanes in the middle of an intersection and pedestrians don't have the right of way. It's a simpler system...scarier, but simpler. You don't even have to take a driving test. I heard someone say that you can just buy your license. hahaha. You have to be a good driver to survive on the road, with quick maneuvering skills and such, because if you can't handle it, you're going to get in an accident, which there are suprisingly few of with all these crazy drivers. Never mind, there's a lot of accidents. I just saw like three or four today. The difference between accidents here and accidents in the US is rubbernecking. People are too concerned with what's on their agendas to watch other people's accidents. When we're around an accident, all you hear is honking because people just want to get through and they don't care a whole lot about the accident. They make that tsk noise and they go, "Ai, an accident," and keep driving. The reason I fear for my life is because just looking out the window makes me scared, especially in my uncle's freight truck. Cars get REALLY close to each other and the freight trucks here have like a flat front kind of like a bus, so it's like you yourself are going to crash into whatever you're super close to. >_< So scary. And watching the way people drive, it's like any moment could be my last because they're going to smash into our car and we don't wear seatbelts! I fear for other people's lives too because most people on the road are pedestrians, who cross when they feel like it, and mopeds/motorcyles, which drive just like cars but they can fit in even tinier spaces. Being in China makes me want a moped, by the way, but when I'm in America, all I want to do is pick them up and move them out of parking spots because I don't feel that mopeds and motorcycles deserve a whole freaking parking space--a problem that is not a problem here because everyone parks where they want. haha. So yeah, if you're ever in China, just make sure you look both ways at least ten times before crossing and you might want to do it a few more times when you get to the middle of the road.

I went shopping today but there wasn't a whole lot I wanted to buy because when I go shopping I feel sad because I'm too fat by Chinese standards to wear the clothing here and when I see cute stripey stuff I just feel like I'm going to look fat in it. Stupid judgmental Chinese. I was perfectly fine with people not telling me that I gained a lot of weight because I already knew that and don't need other people to point out all my flaws. Even my cousin made me feel bad about it. Sigh. Pretty sick of it, if you can't tell. Whatever. I'd rather be chubby than have an eating disorder, thank you very much. But anyways, I bought a couple shirts and a bag and this necklace with an ampersand because for some reason the word "ampersand" makes me laugh. hahaha. I want to buy some shoes but for some reason, ugly is in. Their shoes have too much going on..same with a lot of their shirts. I suppose this is going to be in in America soon...LOTS of lace, pearls, and rhinestones..COMBINED. I saw a few places with shoes I'd wear but I didn't want to slow down the pack. I saw some shoes that I did want but they didn't come in my size because I'm a giant. A lot of the clothes I see people wear are really cute though...but it might be because everyone here is so friggin' skinny and petite. I really like my bag. haha. There will be other days for shopping anyways.

Another event made me fear for my life today. It was probably one of my worst nightmares come true..being covered with bugs!! I wasn't like covered per se, but they were flying all around me and into the food and tea and soup. Ugh it was so disgusting. Dinner by the water in China is not romantic or fun or anything like it is back home. >_< It's smelly, noisy, and buggy, and the water looks like poop. haha. The food was good but the experience was so gross. It would've been perfectly fine if there weren't any bugs. It was an interesting experience though, I suppose.
